Bakarwals are one of the oldest tribes of Kashmir. Kashmiri Bakarwals are a community of nomadic shepherds who live half the year in the mountains and forests to graze their cattle. The Bakarwals are also referred to as the ‘gujjar Bakarwals’. The Bakarwals of Kashmir are one of many shepherd communities of north India and especially the Himalayan states like Ladakh, Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand. The nomadic shepherd communities are called by different names in these states. They’re called Bakarwals in Jammu & Kashmir, Changpa in Ladakh, Gaddi in Himachal and simply Gujjar in Uttarakhand.
