After a massive wildfire ripped through Jasper, Alta., the devastation and despair in the historic town is extensive. 30 per cent of the town has been destroyed, though all critical infrastructure — including the town's hospital, library, and firehall — have been saved. Crews battling hotspots in the UNESCO world heritage site are hoping cooler temperatures and rain will help them gain the upper hand. Jayme Doll reports on the active situation from Hinton, Alta., where many locals have sought shelter.

FIFA has announced it will deduct six points from Canada's national women's soccer team at the Paris Olympics following this week's drone soccer scandal. Along with the points, the organization announced head coach Bev Priestman has been suspended from all soccer activities for one year and that the Canadian Soccer Federation will face a fine of $226,000. In a statement following the sanctions, Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue said Canada Soccer is disappointed with the impact of the decision on the athletes, and they are now exploring appeal options. Crystal Goomansingh explains.

One of the most experienced Canadian athletes at these Olympic games is gymnast Ellie Black from Halifax. This will be the 28-year old's fourth time at the Olympics, and she is still the country's best chance at the gymnastics medal. As Mike Armstrong explains, Black is part of a trend of gymnasts lasting longer in the sport, but it's not easy.

Plus, communities across the western U.S. and Canada have been under siege from raging wildfires in recent days. In rural Idaho, a fast moving wildfire sparked by lightning sent people fleeing on roads ringed with towering flames. While in Oregon, a firefighting aircraft crashed Friday, killing the pilot. As Bianca Facchinei reports, a human-caused inferno in California has erupted, becoming one of the largest in the state's history.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is spending the next week campaigning for votes in northern Ontario. The tour comes on the heels of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh's, and it's one of the regions of the country that seems most ready for change — partly due to a major re-drawing of the electoral map. David Akin takes a closer look at the politics of Ontario's north.

And finally, just one day after a historical opening ceremony for Paris 2024, the Olympic games are in full swing. Excitement in Toronto for the Summer Olympics is just getting started. Lexy Benedict has more on how bars, restaurants and fans are feeling ahead of the games.
