This is the all-new second-generation Audi Q5 SUV. It gets a new look and more interior space.

At the front the Q5 has a more dominant singleframe grille, there are new body creases down the side and redesigned taillights at the rear but in all honesty, it’s as before for the Q5.

By using a mix of hot formed steel and aluminium bonnet and boot lid in the construction of the body, Audi has shed up to 90kg of weight.

At launch, there are two engines on offer, both of which come fitted as standard with a seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive.

There’s a 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 249bhp and 273lb ft of torque. It’ll return 40.9mpg on a combined cycle and emit 157g/km of CO2. While the 0-62mph dash takes just 6.3 seconds.

You can also get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel with 187bhp and 295lb ft of torque. This will return 56.5mpg and emit 132g/km of C02. It’ll get to 62mph from standstill in 7.9 seconds.

Both engines are available in three trims; SE, Sport and S Line.

Quattro system in normal driving sends its torque front wheels, with power only being sent to the rear axle when needed for added traction.

There's a newly developed five-link suspension system, while Audi Select allows you to control the vehicle's comfort and dynamic settings.

‘Personal Route Assist’ learns your regularly taken routes and suggest the best route depending on traffic information.

As standard, the tailgate is electrically operated while an optional hands-free system can be selected.

Inside, you can now get the cost optional Audi virtual cockpit which allows you to personalise the instrument panel and features a 12.3in high-resolution screen. The infotainment system gets a rotary controller between the front seats linked to an 8.3in display, while MMI touch with optional navigation plus brings a touchpad and gesture control.

The new Q5 gets a variety of standard and optional safety packs including; adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist (does minor steering for you); active lane assist, distance warning; rear cross traffic assist; pre-sense city emergency braking system;  and park assist.

We took the 2.0-litre TDi Quattro S Tronic in S Line trim for a road test.
