Fertilizing your aquarium plants at the roots is key. Osmocote, is an amazing product I've used on terrestrial plants, and in my vegetable gardens. Osmocote is perfectly sage to use in the planted aquarium, as long as you do it in moderation. Too much fertilizer could lead to algae problems. Osmocote is a fertilizer that breaks down over time, it is a slow release. That is perfect for aquarium plants, liquid fertilizers we use are a fast release, it gives the plants a lot of nutrients right away, but that can shock the plants and get them used to a high demand of nutrients. Plants really need to eat at the roots, as "dustinsfishtanks" always says, "plants eat 4 to 400 times more at their roots" dustin has always stand by that, and so have I. You need to feed your plants where they eat most. If we eat out of our mouths don't try to see us out of our noses. A good roots system is key to a plants survival, and osmocote right at the roots is perfect. This is a cheaper alternative to root tabs, it has more nutrients, and last  a lot longer. there are a couple ways to apply it, for example, you can go online to ebay etc, and get gel capsules that break down over time, this is a very easy, clean way about fertilizing your plants with osmocote. i on the other hand use ice cube trays. if you freeze these pellets in trays of water, you can then take the frozen cube and put it in the substrate, and as the ice melts, the fertilizer will be embedded in the substrate. I have a dirted aquarium that is going past four years old in this video, and it is just time to recharge the soil by adding a little boost to it. I don't ever clean my substrate with a gravel vaccum, i let all of the organic debri settle into the topsoil layer of my substrate to add nutrients back into my soil, my substrate .
