JAW-DROPPING Chess Tactics Explained by GM Susan Polgar!

We all know the importance of chess tactics and there are few better feelings than spotting an awesome sacrifice and getting to play it in an important game. But what about those complicated positions where it looks like there must be a winning combination but there are so many different options it's almost impossible to find the right line?

This video from GM Susan Polgar can help with exactly these kind of situations!

There is an underlying logic to most tactical positions. When we have the inner workings of chess tactics explained, we can combine them and work backwards to find winning moves. The 4 main tactical types are forks, pins, skewers and the discovery (discovered checks or discovered attacks) and, in this video, GM Susan Polgar showcases some amazing endgame puzzles that work because of hidden fork tactics.

Note that Susan highly recommends endgame puzzles as they are often the purest form of tactics - all the pieces on the board are used to achieve the win. There are no other distractions and so it is easier to recognize what's important. It's these tactical patterns that will serve you well in future.

There are 4 puzzles in this video with all of the chess tactics explained by Susan. However, you should first try and solve them yourself. Pause the video, try and work everything out (including all the different responses by the opponent) before listening to the solution.

If you managed to solve a puzzle, fantastic! If not, make a note of what you missed or any mistake you made. The process of identifying these mistakes will help you fix them and make you a stronger tactician.

It's not surprising, with the topic being forks, that each of the positions in this video involve knights. However, we see them paired with a rook then a bishop the a second knight. It's the way these pieces coordinate to restrict the Black King and Queen, force them onto 'forkable' squares and even place them in zugzwang that are the real learning points.
