Messaging apps are used daily by basically everyone who has internet access. So it’s no surprise that they have often become the focus of cyber attacks. In July 2023, Chinese messaging platform Tigo, experienced a data breach, exposing more than 100.000.000 records online. It included names, usernames, email addresses, photos, messages, and even IP addresses! You surely wouldn’t want to find yourself in a similar situation, would you? That’s why using one of the secure messaging apps is crucial. Today I will talk about the top 3 safest messaging apps you can get for free!

🔐 The mots secure messaging app - Signal

My first recommendation is the safest messaging app for iOS and Android users. I’m talking about Signal. It’s known for its robust end-to-end encryption, which keeps the messages private between sender and recipient. This protects messages from breaches, unauthorized access, and surveillance. Another Signal advantage over other best messaging apps is that it has an open-source protocol, created by Signal themselves. Maybe it wouldn’t be so special if it wasn’t considered the most secure messaging app protocol available. There was quite in-depth research done on it, and we have found no major flaws in its design, which is very encouraging.

Moreover, Signal does not collect private information about its users even when it’s requested from government agencies such as the FBI. Yup, they can refuse to do that, so all the FBI can see is the last date you connected to the service and when you registered for it. Now looking at the security features of Signal, it doesn’t disappoint either. It has a screenshot blocker, disappearing messages, single-view media, an option for backups, an incognito keyboard, and rich media. Well, that’s a lot, but somehow the app doesn’t feel bloated or over complicated to use. The only privacy drawback I can think of in this Signal app review  is that the sign-up requires my phone number. But to be fair, most best messaging apps for Android and iOS do.

🔐 WhatsApp - the most popular secure messaging app

At first, WhatsApp was created to avoid costly international texting fees, but with time it grew into the main messaging app for many users around the globe. But how safe are those 2 billion users? Whatsapp app uses the same end-to-end encryption as Signal, so that’s a plus. It doesn’t store messages on its servers, but neither of those stopped a massive leak of 500 million users' data back in November 2022. Looking at the features, it has plenty. I really like that I can set messages and images to self-destruct. Another extra feature is the possibility to transfer your chat history from iOS to Android. Besides, there are also some more standard features such as video and voice calls, group chats, stickers, and location sharing.

🔒 Telegram - anonymous messaging app

So that covers my Whatsapp review, but if you’re looking for something more than just secure messaging apps, Telegram might be for you. It’s an entire worldwide social-media platform with huge user groups and broadcasts with accounts that have millions of followers.

While it’s security solid, it can’t really compare to Signal as its own custom MTProto encryption is not open-source and not as proven. Also, chats with more than 2 participants can’t be end-to-end encrypted, so if you wanna have a chat with more people, it’s better to be safe than sorry and choose one of the previously mentioned apps.
