Austria gained many enemies and a coalition including Russia, Prussia, and Italy joined together to tear Austria and the Ottomans down from their semi-hegemonic alliance. But as the Austrian army was being pushed back, domestic strife in Russia led to the Russians effectively withdrawing from the war, allowing Austria to secure terms, that, while weakening Austria slightly, were not punitive and retained Austrian hegemony. After being brought to the brink, the Old Order held, if shakily, against the forces of populism. Despite a socialist revolution in Hungary, the Austrian Eagle stands above its enemies.
