Flinders Island, north of Tasmania in Bass Strait, has a waste problem and locals in the town of Killiecrankie are taking things into their own hands, one bottle at a time.

The community has purchased a glass crushing machine and is using the sparkling recycled material called cullet in all sorts of practical and fun ways.

They've used it to add sparkle to paths, fill potholes, improve garden soil, provide a base for laying agricultural pipe, and to improve tensile strength in concrete.

Flinders Island council is watching the trial closely, as the island's rubbish tip reaches its capacity.
