Regelation is the increase of the melting point of a substance under pressure. A fascinating demonstration of this is possible by pushing a piece of string down on a block of ice. At the point of contact the pressure increases the melting point, causing the ice to melt, and letting the string sink. As soon as the pressure is past, the water again turns to ice, trapping the string inside. Glaciers move like rivers due to the property of regelation.
