Measuring Waves in a Ripple Tank (Required Practical) - GCSE Physics | kayscience.com

A ripple tank can be used to generate waves. If a light is shone above the ripple tank, then shadows are produced below it. You can count the number of wavelengths produced over a certain distance.

To calculate the wavelength of each wave you divide the total distance by the number of wavelengths. The wavelength you calculate must have the unit metres.

You can then count the number of waves in 20 seconds. To calculate the frequency you divide the total number of waves by  20 s.

To calculate the wave speed you multiply the wavelength by the frequency
The unit for wave speed is metres / second
