Robin Hood (83 min)

Synopsis: Legend comes to life when minstrel Allan-a-Dale sings of the many adventures of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. The dashing and charismatic Robin Hood, along with his friend Little John, steal from the rich to give to Friar Tuck and the poor living near Sherwood Forest. One day, after Robin Hood returns some money to a family taxed by the Sheriff of Nottingham, he ends up at the castle of the lovely Maid Marian, his childhood sweetheart. There, he enters into an archery tournament held by the perfidious Prince John and his advisor Sir Hiss. After winning the tournament and denouncing Prince John as the Phony King of England, there is a romantic party in the forest, where Robin and Marian fall in love once more. In retaliation for Robin Hood’s actions, Prince John triples taxes and imprisons the townspeople, forcing Robin Hood and his friends into action to save the day in the name of the true King Richard.

Trivia:
• Frames: 119,520
• While the film is primarily engaged in retelling the legend of Robin Hood, there are also elements of the story of Reynard the Fox, a twelfth-century legend about a fox who defies a tyrannical lion king and his wolf henchman on numerous occasions.
• In several sequences, composer George Bruns sought to capture the flavor of the period by using medieval instruments such as French horns and harpsichords, and occasionally just a mandolin.
• The Robin Hood legend has long been popular with moviemakers including Disney’s own live-action version The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men in 1952.
• Some 350,000 drawings were made for the production, with over 100,000 painted cels and 800 painted backgrounds.
• The character of Friar Tuck was originally designed as a pig, but was later changed to a badger to avoid appearing disrespectful to religious sensibilities. The Sheriff of Nottingham was originally intended to be portrayed as a goat.
• The song “Love,” by George Bruns and Floyd Huddleston, was nominated for an Academy Award.
