If you're a fan of the Pillsbury Bake Off you've come to the right place! I'm trying some 1950s bake off recipes from Pillsbury's Best of the Bake Off Collection, originally published in 1959.

PEPPY APPLE CHEESE BREAD (pg 89)
2c sifted flour
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp baking soda
1/2tsp salt
1/2c butter
2/3c sugar
1/2c shredded cheddar cheese
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 1/2c shredded raw apple
1/2c chopped nuts (optional)

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Cream together butter and sugar. Add shredded cheese and mix until smooth and creamy. Blend in eggs. Add shredded apples and mix well.
Blend in dry ingredients, half at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in chopped nuts (if using). Pour into a well greased 9x5 loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 50 to 60 minutes. Cool before slicing.

LUNCHEON CHEESEOLETTES (pg 164)
3/4c sifted flour
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp salt
1/2c chopped onion
2Tbsp oil or shortening
6 eggs
2 1/2c shredded cheddar cheese

Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Sauté onion in oil or shortening until golden brown. Set aside.
Beat eggs until thick and ivory colored. Fold in shredded cheese. Add dry ingredients and onion, folding gently but thoroughly. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto hot greased griddle. Bake until golden brown on both sides, turning only once. Serve hot with Ketchup sauce.

Ketchup sauce: combine 1/2c ketchup, 1tsp Worcestershire sauce, and 1/4c water in saucepan; heat to simmering point.

HOOT OWL COOKIES (pg 441)
2 1/2c sifted flour
2tsp baking powder
1/2t salt
3/4c softened butter
1c firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1tsp vanilla
1 1/2oz unsweetened chocolate
1/4tsp additional baking soda
chocolate chips
whole cashews

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Cream together butter and brown sugar. Mix in egg and vanilla. Add dry ingredients gradually and mix thoroughly. Set aside.
Combine unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled, and 1/4tsp baking soda. Set aside.
Remove 2/3 of dough to floured surface. Blend remaining 1/3 of dough with melted chocolate. Roll out half of light dough to a 10" x 4.5" strip. Shape half of dark dough into a roll 10" long; place on strip of light dough. Mold sides of light dough around dark; wrap.  Repeat with remaining dough. Chill at least 2 hours.
Cut into slices about 1/8" to 1/4" thick and place 2 slices together on a greased baking sheet to resemble an owl's face. Pinch a corner of each slice to form ears. Place a chocolate chip in center of each slice for eyes; press a whole cashew nut between the slices for a beak.
Bake at 350 for 8 to 12 minutes.
