The wall of water was triggered by the country's biggest ever earthquake.
Cars, lorries and boats bobbed like toys as a wave of debris spread over huge swathes of northeastern Japan.
Some 3,000 people living close to a nuclear plant in Fukushima, north of Tokyo, were told to evacuate after the reactor's cooling system malfunctioned, but there are no reports of a radiation leak.
