What is Poli Padyami?

Poli Padyami is one of the hindu pujas (Nomu) practiced by ladies mostly in southern India. It is performed in the first day of the month of Margasira which comes after the auspicious month of Kartika. During Poli Padyami women dip a wick in oil in a banana stem and light it and leave them in water in a pond or river. Some people go to the nearby temple to perform Poli Padyami ritual and some others perform it in home itself.

What is the story of Poly Padyami?
According to legend, Poli was one of the five daughters-in-law of a family.

Her mother-in-law and the other four daughters-in-law went to the river in the morning to take a dip and light a lamp, a sacred ritual all through the month of Kartika month, Poli was left to look after home.

A devout house-wife Poli picked up scattered cotton in the backyard and used the butter stuck to her fingers after churning curd for lighting the lamp in the Banana Stem and leave it in water during the month of Kartikam. The other family members were unaware of it.

Seeing her devotion the gods were very much pleased with Poli and sent the Pushpaka Vimana to take her to heaven alive. As the Poli got on board, her family members also tried to enter catching hold of her legs but the gods refused to take them as their devotion was not pure like Poli’s.
Since then the day also marked the beginning of the Maargasira maasam and Poli Padyami is performed by Hindus.
