Prevention: Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, manage chronic conditions, avoid smoking, and reduce noise exposure to decrease the risk of hearing loss by 30-40%.

Noise Exposure: Use ear protection in noisy environments, reduce exposure to loud noises, and have regular hearing checks if you work in such settings. Noise levels above 85 dB are harmful with prolonged exposure.

Mild Hearing Loss: Difficulty hearing in noisy environments but normal hearing in quiet rooms.

Moderate Hearing Loss: Needing repetition in quiet rooms or difficulty understanding speech in moderately noisy places like malls.

Severe Hearing Loss: Requiring people to speak loudly or shout to be understood, even in quiet environments.

Mechanisms of Damage: Hair cells in the cochlea do not regenerate once damaged by loud noises, leading to permanent hearing loss. Loud noises also increase oxidative stress and cellular damage.

Common Causes: Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is the most common, followed by noise-induced hearing loss. Ear infections, particularly in children, and certain medications also contribute.

Treatments: Hearing aids amplify sound; cochlear implants bypass damaged hair cells to stimulate the auditory nerve directly. Auditory training and cognitive behavioral therapy can also help.

Medications for Ear Infections: Common antibiotics include amoxicillin, augmentin, cefuroxime, and azithromycin. Eardrops like ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone are used to treat infections.

Earwax Blockage: Softening agents like carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide drops are used to soften earwax for easier removal.
