They have traditionally been defined by the use of ancient and early medieval Germanic languages and are thus equated with Germanic-speaking peoples. The Romans named the area belonging to North-Central Europe in which Germanic peoples lived Germania, stretching East to West between the Vistula and Rhine rivers and north to south from Southern Scandinavia to the upper Danube. Scholars generally agree that it is possible to refer to Germanic-speaking peoples after 500 BCE. Between around 500 BCE and the beginning of the Common Era, archeological and linguistic evidence suggest that the Urheimat of the Proto-Germanic language, the ancestral idiom of all attested Germanic dialects, was primarily situated in the southern Jutland peninsula. Further information: Pytheas, Bastarnae, Sciri, Cimbrian War, and Gallic Wars According to some authors the Bastarnae or Peucini were the first Germani to be encountered by the Greco-Roman world and thus to be mentioned in historical records. They appear in historical sources going back as far as the 3rd century BCE through the 4th century CE.
