Full Title of Talk:
Extracellular mediated tissue cross talk during exercise

Introduction to the talk:
Once regarded as trash cans for the cell, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are now emerging as a fundamental conveyors of intercellular communication in a range of pathological and physiological contexts. This talk will discuss early work suggesting EVs may facilitate inter-tissue communication of protein, miRNA, lipid and metabolite in the context of exercise. In particular the presentation will focus on advanced proteomic analyses used to test this hypothesis and highlight the utility of exercise as a model to understand the intricate manner by which EVs might communicate between tissues.

About the speaker:
Dr. Martin Whitham is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Metabolism at University of Birmingham and adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University. His research interest is in the endocrinology and tissue cross-talk in the context of exercise and the role small vesicles, exosomes and secreted proteins might play in this process in health and disease.
