Today I want to talk about some common signs that your turbocharger may be failing and symptoms of a bad turbo to look out for.

A turbocharger is a device that uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which in turn spins a compressor that forces more air into the engine. This allows more fuel to be burned, increasing engine power. However, turbos can wear out over time.

Here are some of the main symptoms of a failing turbo:

Low Engine Performance - One of the first signs is a noticeable decrease in overall engine power. Your vehicle may feel sluggish accelerating or lack power at higher speeds. This happens because a worn turbo cannot pressurize the intake air properly.

Blue Smoke from the Exhaust - If you see blue or gray smoke coming from the tailpipe, it could indicate the turbo is leaking oil into the exhaust system. This is a telltale sign the turbo seals are worn.

Turbo Whistle - You may hear a high-pitched squealing or whistling sound coming from the turbo area. This typically means the turbo bearings are worn and need to be replaced.

Burning Oil Smell - Along with blue exhaust smoke, a burning oil odor can point to a turbo problem causing oil to leak past worn seals.

Reduced Fuel Economy - A failing turbocharger has to work harder reducing engine efficiency. This usually shows up as worse gas mileage.

Check Engine Light - The engine computer may detect issues with the turbo or related sensors and turn on the check engine warning light.

Poor Acceleration - Turbochargers are designed to improve acceleration and performance. So any noticeable lack of power when accelerating likely indicates a turbo issue.

Loss of High-Speed Power - Struggling to maintain higher speeds is a sign your turbo is not providing the expected power boost.

Oil Leaks - Look around the turbo housing for any external oil leaks. This can mean the turbo seals are worn and need replacement.

So in summary, the most common signs of turbo failure are reduced engine power, blue exhaust smoke, squealing noises, check engine light, poor fuel economy, oil leaks, and acceleration or high-speed problems. I hope this overview gives you a better idea of what to look out for with turbocharger problems. Let me know if you have any other turbo questions!
