DORTMUND: Accident driver (19) leaves for Turkey! "Arrest warrant rejected!" Victim (11) deceased!
Following a suspected speeding accident in Dortmund in which an 11-year-old was fatally injured, the police are looking for the driver of the car by warrant. However, the 19-year-old has since flown to Turkey, said Henner Kruse, spokesman for the public prosecutor's office. "Now we are waiting to see if he comes back." The 19-year-old's lawyer had stated that it was a planned vacation of several weeks and not an escape attempt. Several media outlets had previously reported.
The public prosecutor's office is accusing the 19-year-old of negligent homicide, among other things. He is said to have disregarded a red traffic light on June 29 at a significantly excessive speed. His vehicle hit the boy, who was crossing the road with his sister.
Investigation also into illegal car racing
If a driver drives in traffic in a grossly disorderly and reckless manner in order to achieve the highest possible speed, this can be punished more severely as illegal "solo racing". The 11-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident and later died in hospital. The 15-year-old sister was also thrown onto the sidewalk and suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The public prosecutor's office had already applied in vain for an arrest warrant before the accused, who is of German-Turkish nationality, left the country. He is said to have attempted to influence witnesses and should therefore be remanded in custody due to the risk of concealment. The public prosecutor's office did not consider him to be a flight risk at the time. The local court initially rejected the application. According to Kruse, the arrest warrant was only issued after a successful appeal to the regional court.
