In this tutorial, you will learn How to Outline an Image in Photoshop.
Outlining a drawing in Adobe Photoshop is a method commonly used to transform digital photos into line art. The process relies on the creation of paths surrounding the areas you wish to outline.
Here are our general guidelines to outlining. e’ll be using Pen tool to create a path first, then using brush tool’s settings, we’ll outline the path automatically. This may sound complicated but it really isn’t. Let’s get started.
First open a photo of your choice and create a duplicate to have a backup.
Click on the "Pen" tool in the toolbar. Select the “Paths” icon for the pen in the options bar at the top of the application. Use this tool to create a path around the image by selecting points along the image contours that the pen line follows, outlining the object.
Click on the edge of the image at the beginning of an image curve. Move the pen to the end of that curve and click on the edge of the image again. Curve the line by holding down the mouse button and dragging it to the left or right to produce a curved line. Adjust the line by moving the mouse until it matches the curve of the object. Follow the item with the pen, clicking at the end of each curve. The smaller the curve selection, the more closely the pen follows the outline. You’ll see the path as you proceed.
Follow the contours of the item until you return to the starting point. Click on the starting point to complete the outline. Once you get comfortable with the pen tool, you can create really complex shapes and forms.
The great thing about the path tool is that you can always go back and edit the path further. Now when done, let’s create the actual brush line that’ll follow the path. Create a new layer and name it outline. Select the brush tool and choose the brush tip desired and select a color from the Color panel. Now go back to Pen tool. Right click on the path and select “Stroke Path.”
Choose the "Brush" option to select your predefined brush for use in creating the outline. Click "OK". Right click on the path line again and select Delete path to remove the path.
While this may seem like a tedious task, working with the pen tool really makes things easy even for those who don’t have experience in actual digital drawing/illustrating.
