The last of the big square rigged sailing ships plied their trade right up till 1949. One of their last trades was the freighting of grain from Australia to Europe by way of Cape Horn. These annual sailings became known as 'The Grain Races', and were widely reported in the media. Tor Lindqvist sailed in the great four-masted barque PASSAT in 1938 and 1939. This is part one of his story. For more on the subject see the DVD, The Last Cape Horners, available from Boat Books Australia on 02 94391133
