Sahiwal lies on the vast Indus River plain in the densely populated region between the Sutlej and Ravi rivers. It has been the cradle of ancient civilization at Harappa (3000 BC). Sahiwal was originally known as Gogera after the name of small village on the left bank of the River Ravi. It became a regularly administered area in 1849. With the advent of the Railways, the headquarter was shifted in 1865 to the present site known then as Sahiwal which was a small settlement of local “Sahi” tribesmen.
The city was named after Sir Robert Montgomery, the then Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in British-controlled India in 1865. It was constituted as municipality in 1867. Honoring the wishes of the people, the city acquired its present name on Nov 11, 1966. Okara and Pakpattan were part of Sahiwal District and got separately administered district status in 1982 and 1990 respectively. After many years, Sahiwal got notified as Division on Nov 14, 2008.
