Staircase renovation: How to replace newel posts
Welcome! In this video we are going to show you how to replace the newel posts of your staircase. Let’s begin!
The first thing you will need to do is to remove your old handrail, base rails and spindles. This staircase only has handrails, so I am going to continue removing those now.
Next, we need to determine at what height we are going to cut our newel post. To do this, we place a straight edge on the nosing of 2 or 3 steps and mark the pitch-line. From the pitch-line we need to measure 900 mm up as this is the minimum height required when installing handrails on stairs. In this case we are going to be installing a plain white oak newel post of which we want to keep about 120 mm above the height of the handrail.
Using a spirit level, continue marking around all four sides of your newel post.
Following the lines you have just drawn, go ahead and cut your newel post.
All of our newel posts come with a 50 mm diameter dowel. To fit this, we will need to bore a 50 mm hole in the centre of our newel base. There are several different methods on doing this. We are going to use a 50 mm hole saw, a 35 mm forstner drill bit, and a sharp chisel to remove any remaining pieces of wood.
It is now time to fit your newel post. We recommend choosing from one of our newel base connectors to hide any gaps between your newel post and newel base. These are secured in place with 4 screws.
Next, glue your newel post in place and check it with your spirit level.
To secure your newel post in place, drill a 10 mm deep hole in the newel base, then fix a screw directly through the base and the dowel of your newel post;  plug the remaining whole with a small piece of wood.
Finish up by installing one of our newel post caps and then continue on installing your remaining newel posts.
Well done! You have just finished installing your newel posts. Check out the next tutorials to learn how to finish refurbishing your staircase.
See you later!
