Novak Djokovic vs Andre Agassi Backhand Analysis - Tennis Backhand Lesson. In this tennis backhand lesson, Top Tennis Training coach Simon Konov will analyse the Novak Djokovic backhand and the Andre Agassi backhand. Both Agassi and Djokovic have two of the best two-handed tennis backhands of all time, but what makes their backhands so good, what similarities do they share and more importantly what can we learn from both strokes?

Grips
Andre Agassi uses a continental grip on his right hand (bottom hand) and a strong eastern forehand grip with his left hand (top hand).
Novak Djokovic also uses the continental grip with his right hand (bottom hand) but uses a hybrid grip for the left hand (top hand).
It is between an eastern and semi-western forehand grip.

Preparation
Both players have a great unit turn at the start of their backhand, coiling the upper body and getting side on to the net. This coil helps them initiate the swing of the racket and stores energy in the trunk muscles, especially the oblique muscles, also known as the side abdominal muscles.
Djokovic and Agassi also lift their racket head above the grip level when preparing the racket which creates great leverage in the arm and racket. Leverage equals more force over the ball later in the swing. This lifting of the racket head also gives them space to accelerate the racket without having to lift their arms too high up.

Power Position
Both Agassi and Djokovic reach a great power position at the back of their swing. The key elements include having the racket head higher than the grip, body fully turned sideways on to the net, chin resting above the right shoulder and bodyweight loaded up on the back leg (left leg) whenever possible.
There are a few differences between both players in their tennis backhand power position. Agassi has his strings slightly opened up towards the sky in this back position whereas Djokovic has his strings in more of a neutral position with the side of the racket he will hit the tennis ball with facing towards the left side of the tennis court.
