In news that has just trickled in, the Children's Court has convicted four of the five accused in the sensational Mandar Surlekar kidnap-and-murder case that shocked Goa in 2006.
Pronouncing the judgement, the judge held  all the four accused, Rohan Dhungat, Nafiyaz Sheikh, Shankar Tiwari and Ryan Pinto, guilty of murdering the 16-year-old Surlekar. A fifth accused, Beig, was let off after the court accepted his plea to turn approver.
What sentence the four convicted accused will undergo, all teenagers and friends of Surlekar when they    kidnapped and murdered him, will be known on Tuesday when the Children's court is expected to pronounce its order on the point of sentence.
The murder of 16-year-old Mandar had followed a script pulled right out from a tragedy-thriller fiction novel.
He was first kidnapped from Vasco for ransom on August 14, 2006. Later, the the group of five who were all his friends -  Rohan Dhungat, Nafiyaz Sheikh, Shankar Tiwari, Ryan and Beig - and belonged to well-to-do middle class families, murdered him.
The case had shocked Goa and woke up society to the reality of a materialiastic-driven teenage population.
