The Star Wars movies show us the battle between a galaxy-spanning totalitarian government and a ragtag team of plucky fighters who stand up to the tyranny of the Empire. Throughout the original trilogy the rebels must fight against the Empire with less resources, less funding, and less equipment.

We saw in Star Wars Rebels 3 that the alliance Y Wings were actually clone-wars-era craft that were salvaged from an Imperial station. And this got me thinking, where did the alliance get their X Wings? The X Wing T-65 X Wing was the backbone of the Rebel fleet, serving as the primary fighter in the rebel attacks. After all, the Empire had the resources and power to commission shipyards and factories, but the rebellion didn’t have that option. Everything they had was either salvaged, stolen, or (in the case of the Mon Calamari cruisers) built in secret and disguised as buildings. That’s part of what makes the X-Wing’s history so interesting, so today I’m here to tell you the surprising history of the X-Wing snub fighter.

So... why was the X Wing built for the Empire, and why did the Empire reject the X Wing?
