Porsche has just introduced a significant update for the 2025 911, including the addition of a new hybrid system for the GTS trim. While the introduction of a battery-powered 911 is noteworthy, the real excitement lies in what is coming next for the 992 platform: a new GT2 RS.
Following in the footsteps of the 991-generation 911, the 992 is expected to receive a powerful turbocharged GT2 trim in the latter half of its lifecycle, potentially as soon as next year. This anticipation is fueled by the sighting of a test mule at the Nurburgring, providing a tangible hint of what is to come.
Spy photographers captured footage of this 911 driving on and around the Nurburgring in Germany. Externally, it closely resembles the current GT3 RS, which is known for its naturally aspirated engine. The test car even sported large decals on each side reading "GT3 RS." However, the exhaust note tells a different story.
The distinctive high-pitch wail of the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six is replaced by a more guttural, deeper, and less vocal exhaust note. This difference is a clear indication that this car is not the current GT3 RS. Instead, it sounds remarkably similar to the previous generation GT2 RS.
It is not surprising to see Porsche testing the forthcoming GT2 RS in the body of the GT3 RS. The previous generation GT2 RS also utilized much of the GT3's body and aerodynamic kit, with minor modifications to the front and rear fascias.
The previous generation GT2 RS was the pinnacle of the 991-generation 911 lineup. In 2017, it set the record for the fastest rear-drive production car at the Nurburgring, thanks to its advanced aerodynamics and a 700-horsepower twin-turbo flat-six engine. It further cemented its legacy by setting the overall record in 2021 with an upgrade kit from Manthey Performance. Given the advancements in aerodynamics and suspension in the 992 generation, the new GT2 RS promises to be even more extraordinary.
