For Google services, you can
For Google services, you can get relevant API and use allowed data in your app. Maps, Machine Learning, Workspace, YouTube, Cloud Apps ... everything is there. Where ever you need Google services, it is required to enter API key for that service from Google Cloud Platform.
To start using Google Cloud Platform, first of all, you need to add credit card information in Google Cloud's billing area. Google will charge minor fee in order to verify credit card. After adding credit card, account is verified and can use Google Cloud Platform services.
Pricing for each service may be different. At API's page, look for 'Pricing' option to learn details. You can also visit price list page to learn more. Click at 'Free Tier' to learn more about free usage limitations. For many Google cloud services, you can enjoy 'free tier' interval that renews each month. You will only pay when your free usage limit is over for that month.
Okay, now how will we enable an API from Google Cloud Platform, to use it in our app?
We will enable two APIs,
1- Maps JavaScript API
2- Places API
I want to fetch Google reviews for a business and that needs these two APIs enabled from Google Cloud Platform. Also I will need API key for my app that will utilize these two APIs.
Now how do I know that?
App or plugin used with WordPress, will most likely tell you to go to Google Cloud Platform. Then create an app or project inside 'Google Cloud Platform' and enable those APIs for that specific app. Then get API key from that app settings and enter in plugin settings. Google API key is the app key that we generated in 'Google Cloud Platform'. We will need that API key from Google Cloud Platform.
Let's create an App, generate API key for the app and enable Google Services under that app. When we will use app key in wordpress or anywhere else, we will be able to use Google Services that are enabled under that app.
- In 'Google Cloud Platform', create a new project or 'select a project'
- Switch to that project
- Enable APIs and Services under this app
- Make sure APIs or services have been enabled for project
- Now click at credentials (Remember, you are doing it for a project, you are under a project and doing everything for this specific project)
- Hit 'Create Credentials' and select 'API key'
- Edit this API key
- Restrict this key for domain, website, IP address or mobile app where it will be used and restrict services that will use this key. This is very important. If you won't restrict the key, and key gets leaked, anybody can use this key and you will get the bills. I am creating this app as demo app and I will delete this key after this tutorial.
- Now project is ready and two APIs have been enabled for project
- Get this API key for this project and use in your local or live project settings or in wordpress plugin settings
Then your app will be able to use those services from Google Cloud. In this case I will be able to use Maps API and Places API from Google Cloud Platform.
