The Round House, nestled in
The Round House, nestled in the hills of Los Altos, California, is a truly unique residence that blends history and modernity in a surprising symbiosis. This one-of-a-kind home, one of the few built in California in the 1960s.
Originally, the owners fell in love with this quirky circular house and had plans for a modest remodel. However, shortly after moving in, they realized the inefficiencies of the layout, with low window sills curiously obstructing the spectacular hillside views. This inspired them to seek a renovation that would modernize the property and enhance its unique shape.
As you explore the Round House, it becomes evident that the design team put significant effort into improving its form. Situated on a steep plot, the house offers 180-degree views with a deck that wraps around its entire perimeter. The original central courtyard, once open to the sky, now houses a spectacular kitchen, a fitting gesture for a family that sees the kitchen as the heart of the home. A large circular skylight floods the kitchen with natural light, creating an improvised sundial that illuminates different parts of the custom-crafted curved cabinets.
The layout of the house flows seamlessly, allowing visitors to move effortlessly from the living room to the kitchen and the spacious deck before circling the house via a wrap-around walkway. A concentric hallway surrounds the kitchen and leads to wedge-shaped rooms, thoughtfully arranged to delineate the private from the public spaces. A wedge-shaped outdoor deck is carved out at the intersection of the living room and kitchen, providing breathtaking views of the Bay.
The choice of materials, such as the Japanese-style charred wood siding called Shou Sugi Ban, jointless concrete floors, and curved white walls, creates an atmosphere of sophistication within a minimalist interior. The design team faced creative challenges due to the circular shape of the house, but these difficulties led to innovative solutions that contribute to the uniqueness of this project.
