But how did the Tropic of Cancer get here about 1200 years ago and then move down here
instead of going north in the Northern Hemisphere?
We know that June 21 is the longest day in the world in the Northern Hemisphere and this
important scientific feature was very well understood by our ancient architects. And this temple
has been constructed on the same lines.
It is believed that on June 21, the sun's rays fell directly on the gem in the crown of Lord Surya
in this dance hall due to which the entire sanctum sanctorum lit up.
Now you must have understood that our ancient architects not only had knowledge of
astronomy, but they also designed the geometry of this temple in such a way that the
phenomenon of 180 degree straight line on June 21 is safe with us even today.
The Sun Temple of Modhera was designed in such a way that it had 3 parts. The first part is
called Suryakund or Ramkund. Immediately behind this was the dance pavilion and after that
the sanctum sanctorum,
This Surya Kund, also known as Ram Kund, sometimes contained water.
This is an incredible example of geometry in itself. A total of 108 small and big temples have
been built in it. There was an important reason behind keeping the number of these temples at
108.
