In Israel, the lifting of the ban on state archives of babies, mostly from Yemeni Jewish families, who disappeared in the 1950s, brought the issue back to the country's agenda. For many babies who disappeared from the hospital, their families were not even given birth or death certificates. One of the most frequently voiced claims is that these babies belonging to Mizrahi families may have been kidnapped and given for adoption to wealthy Western Jewish families. These babies, most of whom were from Yemeni parents and whose number is estimated to be between 1,500 and 5 thousand, disappeared between 1948 and 1954.

The majority of immigrants to Israel during this period came from Yemen. A significant part of them came from Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and the Balkans. According to estimated figures, one in eight children of Yemeni families disappeared during that period. In hundreds of documented statements made by the parents of these babies over the years, it is said that their children were taken from them. It is said that no death certificate was issued and the parents did not receive any information from Israel and Jewish organizations regarding the fate of their babies.

However, Chief Archivist of the Israeli State Archives, Yaacov Lozowick, shared documents showing that the fate of a small portion of the "missing" children could not be followed. Allegedly, the documents consisted of records showing that the children died in the hospital. These deaths were met with great insensitivity and families were notified. There remains widespread speculation that the babies were given or sold to childless Holocaust survivors in a secret and systematic operation. The unanimous conclusions of three separate official commissions established to investigate the issue revealed that the vast majority of children were buried because they died of disease. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also described the issue as "an open wound that continues to bleed" for many families who do not know the fate of the missing children. The number of children given up for adoption is still unknown.
