Captain Jonathan Walker, born on
Captain Jonathan Walker, born on March 22, 1799, in Harwich, Massachusetts, was an American abolitionist and mariner known for his efforts to help enslaved people escape to freedom. He gained national attention as "The Man with the Branded Hand" after being captured in 1844 while attempting to transport seven enslaved people from Florida to freedom in the Bahamas. He was tried, convicted of aiding runaway slaves, and branded with the letters "S.S." (for "slave stealer") on his hand as punishment.
Walker's branding and his subsequent publication of his memoir, "Trial and Imprisonment of Jonathan Walker," made him a symbol of the abolitionist movement and a hero to many. He continued to advocate for the abolition of slavery and worked alongside other notable abolitionists of the time.
Captain Jonathan Walker passed away on May 1, 1878, in Muskegon, Michigan. Captain Jonathan Walker is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Muskegon, Michigan. His grave is marked with a headstone that commemorates his bravery and dedication to the abolitionist cause.
