President Biden on Thursday awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, to three U.S. Army soldiers for their "acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty" while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe was recognized posthumously for braving flames and enemy fire while rescuing his fellow soldiers from a burning Bradley Fighting Vehicle in Iraq in 2005. Sergeant First Class Christopher Celiz posthumously received the honor for drawing enemy fire away from a medical evacuation helicopter in Afghanistan in 2018. Master Sergeant Earl Plumlee accepted the award in person for defending his military base in Afghanistan as it was attacked by suicide bombers in 2013.
