Kashmir - the land of mystics and sages, the citadel of knowledge and learning, where great philosophers and comprehensive philosophic systems evolved. The greatest among them – the colossus commentator of Natyashastra, the mightiest mystic of Tantraloka, an avid aesthetician, a polymathic personality, who left his influence on mankind was Acharya Abhinavagupta, a Bhairva incarnate and valleys valuable contribution to the world. He is a ‘Mahamaanav’ the Man – supreme, not in the ordinary sense of the word but way far ahead of those, whom we call men. Our senses may not be able to get an idea of his versatility or his greatness but he is like a cult, the last signature, or the final word. This makes him unique - Abhinava - the ever New.
It needs no reiteration that all along, he has been a focus of study in India and abroad. Those who come to know about him for the first time are dazed by his grandeur but subsequently, Abhinavagupta starts sinking in them. The world gradually starts changing before them, both in perception and in essence. The aim is to unravel him, so that he is available to the lay as well as to the aspirants. There are hundreds of questions that today’s generation wants to find answers to.
Here he is, inviting us to take a plunge and retrieve the gems and pearls from the ocean of his philosophies. With his blessings, hope this small work, from the most ignorant one (like me), will do great wonders.
