I wanted to share a typical practice approach flight in N62DL at one of my local airports, Tacoma Narrows KTIW.  I’ve heard from many of you that folks appreciate seeing the details of the flight procedures.  In this video, I’ve tried to keep more of the nuts and bolts of an IFR flight.  It’s a little longer than I typically like but hopefully it strikes a good balance.  I’m always happy to hear (constructive 😊) feedback in the comments.

As many of you know to stay IFR current per FAR 61.57 (c), every six months an instrument pilot needs to fly six instrument approaches, one hold and intercepting and tracking a radial in actual conditions or under the hood with a safety pilot.  Note this is a summary so please check out the FAR for the actual requirements!

We are fortunate in the Pacific Northwest to frequently have IFR weather that makes it easy to do this in actual conditions.  I love doing these flights and try to do them as frequently as I can.

Note that on this flight, I was able to log the two approaches and the hold at Tacoma.  I didn’t log the approach back into Renton because it was mostly in VFR conditions.  The FAA has said that to be able to be logged, an approach needs to be flown in IMC after the final approach fix.

A couple of notes on this video and flight:
- I have tried out a GoPro attached to the underside of the tail.  I think the video from there is really cool IMHO but I’d love to hear feedback.  It’s harder to manage of course as I can’t recharge in flight but the images interesting.  Case in point, the battery ran out at the 28:15 point!
- I like to mix up hand-flown and autopilot-flown approaches when I practice.  Both are important for proficiency.  Hand-flying gives stick and rudder practice while using the auto-pilot freshens up the “buttonology”. Both get rusty quickly if you don’t practice!  When I’m recording a flight, I am sensitive that this can cause distractions.  Hence I did all of these approaches with the autopilot on (at least until I was past the final approach fix).

I hope you enjoy the video.  Please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE if you do!
