Global Value Chains, Functional Specialisation and Labour Markets

The emergence of global value chains has radically changed the organisation of production in the EU economy. In particular, the increasingly fine-grained international division of labour has made it possible for countries to specialise in individual business functions of the value chain. In a project sponsored by the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, the Vienna Institute for International Economics Studies (wiiw) and the Gdańsk University of Technology investigate the positions of EU member states along this functional dimension, and shed light on the determinants and implications associated with such positioning.
