Working conditions are desperately difficult.
Working conditions are desperately difficult. The textile mills are large tin sheds packed with power-looms. The environment is hot, humid, dark and extremely noisy. Workers have no hearing protection. Serious injuries are commonplace. Most machines have exposed belts - a potential death trap for workers under pressure.
The powerful looms run 24 hours a day, six days a week, with 2 shifts of workers. The noise is deafening and their speed threatening. Being there for just a few minutes can leave you feeling sick and your ears ringing 24 hours further on. Workers are continually exposed to sound levels in excess of 110+ decibels - a noise level similar to that of being next to a jackhammer or standing 30 metres from a jet plane engine during take-off.
