Carfentanil is a powerful and deadly opioid often used in veterinary medicine to sedate large animals. such as elephants and bears. It is not meant for humans. Carfentanil is about 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 5,000 times more potent than heroin. A 0.002 milligram
dose can be enough to be fatal.

Carfentanil can be found in pill, powder, and liquid form. It is a particularly harmful substance because of its great potency. Law enforcement and health   officials must take extreme caution and wear gloves and masks when handling carfentanil. A trace amount of the drug can be fatal when inhaled or touched. Carfentanil like other opioids,  can produce pain relief, tranquility, and euphoria. However, long-term use can lead to suicidal behavior, paranoia, vertigo, and heart failure.

Similar to fentanyl, carfentanil has been found mixed into other drugs like heroin in order to increase the other drug’s potency and the dealer’s supply. Since users are often unaware that their drugs may be laced with carfentanil, the risk of overdose greatly increases. Signs of carfentanil addiction mirror that of opioid addiction and include weight loss, insomnia, periods of confusion, and depression.

The first step in treating carfentanil addiction is to stop using the drug to eliminate toxins from the body. This process is known as Detox. Once someone stops using carfentanil common physical withdrawal symptoms include fever and chills, increased heart rate, stomach pain and tremors. People can also experience psychological withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia. Because withdrawing from carfentanil alone can be extremely uncomfortable and dangerous, it is recommended to detox under the supervision of medical professionals.

Once a person’s physical health is stable, it is important to seek counseling to address their mental health. Counseling helps a person to understand what underlying causes may have lead to abuse of carfentanil. It also teaches a person how to constructively address those issues. In some cases, medications like Suboxone and Vivitrol may be recommended to help reduce cravings so that a person can better focus on counseling. Holistic addiction treatment programs are also recommended to learn ways to care for total health--physical, mental, and spiritual, which increses the changes of long-term recovery.
