In 1790, King Kamehameha I invaded Maui with the goal of uniting all of the Hawaiian Islands under his rule. One of his first challenges was defeating Maui's army, which was led by Chief Kalanikupule. The two forces met at the Iao Valley, and after a bloody battle, Kamehameha emerged victorious.

3. The Iao Valley is home to Hawaii's state flower—the yellow hibiscus—as well as Hawaii's state bird—the nene goose.
