You may not notice the cold air coming into your home during the winter. You may not notice the air conditioning escaping in the summer. But by installing the right weatherstripping, you may notice a huge effect on your utility bills. Let us tell you about the different types of weatherstripping and which one is right for your projects.
You may not feel the cold air coming through a door or window, but if that air is there, you'll definitely feel it once you get your utility bill. Drafts can get pricey. It's much cheaper to fix them than it is to pay for all of the heat or air conditioning you're losing.
For drafty doors, start by installing a threshold. Thresholds fill the gap between the floor and the bottom of the door. When choosing a threshold, it should have about a half-inch gap for the vinyl bulb.
Many times you're going to need to cut the threshold down to fit your particular door. For aluminum thresholds, use a hacksaw. For wood, a fine-toothed handsaw should do the trick. Once it's cut, you're going to need some caulk and screws to attach it to the floor.
When the threshold is in place, it's time for the weatherstripping. Whether you're applying weatherstripping to doors or to windows there are three basic options: compression, V-type and foam.
Compression weatherstripping is used to seal swinging doors and window sashes. It consists of a molded strip (it may be wood, aluminum, or rigid vinyl) with a flexible vinyl bulb along one side. As a rule, compression weather-stripping is the most durable type available. If you're applying compression weatherstripping, you'll need a hacksaw or tin snips to cut the stripping to size, as well as a hammer and nails to secure it.
V-type is fitted against the side of the door or window jamb so it presses against the edge of the door or sash and forms a seal. V-type weatherstripping requires either scissors to cut vinyl or a hack saw to cut bronze. And if you're installing bronze -- which looks really good on older homes -- you'll also need a hammer and nails to keep it from bending or wrinkling.
Foam weatherstripping comes in various sizes, with an adhesive backing on one side. It's fastened to the edge of a door or window stop, or to the bottom of a sliding window sash. Foam weatherstripping is easy to install because all you need is scissors. But will only last from one to three years.
Once you finished sealing everything up, you'll have a much more comfortable and energy efficient home.
