(12 Jul 1996) English/Nat The Prince and Princess of Wales have agreed on the terms of their divorce, ending months of bitter negotiations and wrangling. The royal couple have consented to a swift divorce, following three and a half years of separation and a stormy 15-year marriage. Lawyers say legal proceedings will begin on Monday and the split will be finalised by 28th August. Throngs of reporters gathered outside the offices of Princess Diana's solicitor, awaiting the statement. Her lawyer explained that a verbal announcement would not be made. SOUNDBITE: There is a statement which is being faxed to the Press Association. But it's not going to be read out. So, there isn't anything to say, I'm afraid. I'm not commenting on that, and you wouldn't expect me to comment on the private affairs of a client. SUPER CAPTION: Anthony Julius, Princess Diana's divorce lawyer The financial details are confidential, but the Princess is expected to receive a payout of more than 22 (m) million US dollars for a "clean break". The statement confirmed she will remain an official member of the Royal Family but will no longer be called Her Royal Highness - instead she will be known as Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana's public role was not clearly stated. She is known to picture herself as a roving goodwill ambassador, but Buckingham Palace said her role was "for her to decide". The Princess will also live at Kensington Palace, where she left - keeping a low profile - soon after the announcement was made. Earlier in the day, it was business as usual for Prince Charles, who accompanied visiting South African President Nelson Mandela on walkabout in the largely black London neighbourhood of Brixton. Friday's newspaper headlines pointed towards the inevitable - a final royal break-up following months of bitter wrangling. On Thursday night, Princess Diana made a rare public appearance together with the Queen Mother, perhaps as a last gesture of reconciliation with the House of Windsor, with whom her relations have becoming increasingly strained. The Queen Mother had invited the Princess and her sons to a Royal Tournament performance, but the two women sat separated by an empty seat at the beginning of the performance. As British newspapers headlines continued to be dominated by the divorce, the latest chapter of the royal saga prompted mixed reactions. SOUNDBITE: It was inevitable. There was a massive age gap between them. They're very different people, really. And Diana was just a child when they met each other. And now she's grown up, found her own interests, her own friends, her own job. She doesn't need him anymore. SUPER CAPTION: Hilary Foster SOUNDBITE: I think that Diana is a great lady, and if she came to the States to live maybe that would be kinda fun. We don't have any royalty over there. SUPER CAPTION: Sarah Brosnan Diana, Princess of Wales - as her new title describes her - was keeping a low profile Friday as she appeared in public for the first time, just a few hours after lawyers had announced the royal divorce. Leaving the exclusive Dukes Hotel in London the Princess stared resolutely ahead, ignoring the waiting media. The Princess is understood to have agreed to a "gagging" order as part of the divorce settlement, preventing her from revealing any details of her 15 year marriage to Prince Charles. The price of her silence has not been disclosed, but newspaper reports said she was expected to receive more than 22 (m) million US dollars.
