Deoksugung Palace is where King Gojong stayed after proclaiming the Korean Empire in 1897.
Gojong tried to introduce new things and achieve modern reforms, but after the Eulsa Treaty and the Hague special envoy incident, he was forced to abdicate in 1907 and passed away in Hamnyeongjeon in January 1919. Afterwards, on March 1st, 1919, the March 1st Movement took place in front of the Daehan Gate.
