Newborns with spina bifida are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team to ensure any complications are identified and addressed. http://www.chop.edu/spinabifida

At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), babies with spina bifida have direct access to a full range of pediatric subspecialists who may be involved in their care, including urology, orthopedics, the Spina Bifida Clinic, and more. Evaluation and workup of the newborn after spina bifida surgery is the same whether prenatal or postnatal surgery was chosen.

At CHOP, newborn care after spina bifida surgery is comprehensive. A premature baby who’s had open fetal surgery requires extremely delicate, expert care. Our expert neonatologists are well versed in the special circumstances of babies who have undergone fetal surgery or postnatal surgery, and in the issues of prematurity.

In general, babies who are delivered early will remain at CHOP until about their original due date —-- or what would have been their 40th week of gestation. After surgery for spina bifida, discharge planning begins early in the baby's Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) stay to educate families about their newborn's care, care related to spina bifida, and arrange for the family to be connected to a spina bifida clinic close to their home.
