on 20 August 2024, The UN Palestinian Rights Committee held its 418th Meeting and adopted its Annual Report 2024.
In his opening statement, The Chair stated: "As we recently marked the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which stand as the cornerstone of international humanitarian law, we are starkly reminded of our responsibility to protect civilians in conflict. Yet, as the world watches on, Gaza is engulfed in a relentless war, claiming over 40,000 Palestinian lives, mostly women and children and leading to a humanitarian catastrophe with mass starvation and total absence of basic services."
In the Annual Report the Committee demands that Israel, the occupying Power, reverse its ongoing annexation, home demolitions, settlement expansions and the forced displacement of Palestinians, including women and children. It welcomes the landmark International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion of 19 July 2024. It calls on the General Assembly and Security Council, among other demands, to urgently implement the Advisory Opinion and bring an end to the unlawful Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territory.
