I watched video after video on the Guild Surfliner HH before I ordered mine. All of the reviews seemed to be stellar. For a sub $500 guitar it looks great in the pictures and ads. It looks kind of cool. Something very different for a company to come out with an entry level guitar that is an offset body type. I had recently purchased and covered the Guild Polara, a guitar I am absolutely in love with, and as a result expected great things from the Surfliner HH. guildguitars.com/g/surfliner-hh-shoreline-mist/ Here are some of the specifications for the Surfliner: Model name Guild Surfliner HH Made In Indonesia Bolt on C shaped Maple neck with a maple fretboard • Radius of 10" • Nut Width 1.6875" • Scale Length 25.5" • Neck Construction Bolt-On • 23 Narrow Jumbo Frets Solid Poplar Body with a Double Cutaway Offset shape that comes in two colors: Shoreline Mist (Guitar in Video) and Canyon Dusk Pickup Configuration HH Bridge/Tailpiece Type String-Through Outfitted with two HB-2 Humbuckers with Alnico Il magnets. The HB-2 pickups were developed to recreate the tone of vintage Guild HB-1 pickups in a standard size humbucker format. Brand new the guitar is all over the place on pricing. I found new guitars from $269 all the way to $499. I would suggest shopping around. Used the guitar is really low priced. Reverb shows the low of $184 and a high of $272 depending on condition. Here are my observations. The overall fit and finish of the guitar is excellent. The electronics cavity is clean and appears to have some sort of conductive paint to act as a shielding. The electronics look to be well soldered and well put together. From the specifications listed on the Guild site it says the neck has a satin finish. It does not feel like the other necks that I am used to that also have satin finish. The finish is almost not there is the only way I can describe it. I will have to play the guitar for a while to make up my mind as to whether I think it is comfortable and playable. When I run my hands up and down on the sides of the fretboard the edges of the frets are a little rough and need to be filed down. The first five frets rock and the rest of the frets are flat. All of these things can be corrected. The tuners are okay. They work well for tuning. Over a period of several days I would pick up the guitar and find it spot on in tune. The holes in the middle of the split shaft that you feed the string into in my opinion is too shallow like the tuners on Harley Benton’s and it is difficult as a result to get the B and High E strings to stay in the hole/slot while installing strings. I would recommend replacing the tuners or drilling the string hole a little deeper. The neck is straight and did not need to be adjusted. The string height was too high to play for me and I had to drop the bridge all the way down to get it to the height I wanted which is basically medium low. If I needed to adjust any lower, I would need to put a shim in the neck as the bridge is currently bottomed out on the guitar. Intonation was way off out of the box, and I had to spend about 30 minutes adjusting it to get it dialed in. The neck pickup measures 7.4 k ohms, the bridge measures 6.98 k ohms, and both pickups together measure 3.63 k ohms. The guitar weighs 7 lbs. and 6 ounces or 3.362 kilos. The guitar is well balanced and easy to hold while playing. No neck dive. I like the string through bridge setup, and it is easy and fast to replace strings. At the top of the guitar there are two rocker switches. You can have the following 4 pickup selections: 1. Bridge On, Neck Off 2. Neck On, Bridge Off 3. Neck On and Bridge On 4. Neck Off and Bridge Off The tone and the volume controls are both push pull switches as well. Between the pickup selector switches and the push pull volume and tone controls the guitar produces 8 distinct sounds. 1. Bridge Pickup – Hum Canceling a. Neck = On. Bridge = Off. Volume PP = Off and Tone PP = Off 2. Bridge Pickup – Coil Split a. Neck =On. Bridge = Off. Volume PP = Off and Tone PP = On 3. Bridge Pickup (Coil Split) + Neck Pickup a. Neck = On. Bridge = On. Volume PP = Off and Tone PP = On 4. Bridge Pickup + Neck Pickup - Hum Canceling a. Neck = On. Bridge = On. Volume PP = Off and Tone PP = Off 5. Bridge Pickup (Coil Split) + Neck Pickup (Coil Split) - Hum Canceling a. Neck = On. Bridge = On. Volume PP = On and Tone PP = On 6. Bridge Pickup + Neck Pickup (Coil Split) a. Neck = On. Bridge = On. Volume PP = On and Tone PP = Off 7. Neck Pickup (Coil Split) a. Neck = On. Bridge = Off. Volume PP = On and Tone PP = Off 8. Neck Pickup - Hum Canceling a. Neck = On. Bridge = Off. Volume PP = Off and Tone PP = Off
