Health warnings have been issued for tourists and workers as hot weather nears record for continent. The death of a street sign painter in Italy has prompted calls for urgent changes to working conditions as the country swelters through a freak heatwave.

The 44-year-old man, who has not been named, was painting a zebra crossing in 40C heat at noon on Tuesday in the northern town of Lodi when he collapsed and lost consciousness, apparently as a result of the intense heat. He was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to revive him.

Italy’s heatwave, which follows a wet spring, has been dubbed “Cerberus” after the three-headed hound of Hades in Greek mythology.

In Rome, where temperatures are forecast to hit 41C next week, council staff have been told to work from home if their offices are not air conditioned.

In Sardinia and Sicily, temperatures are set to reach 48C. The highest temperature ever recorded in Europe — 49.8C — was in Floridia in Sicily in August 2021.

Northern Italy is expected to swelter for days. Intense storms are then forecast, including violent hailstorms — an increasingly regular occurence in Italy which play havoc with crops.
