Doing Under Water Search and Recovery in the real world is not that much different from what you learned in your Search and Recovery Course.  Based off your geographical location, the bottom contour, bottom composition, size and weight of the object you are looking for, and how many personnel you have to conduct a search, the skills you learned during your Search and Recovery Course are going to be the basic skills you use in the real world.  The search pattern you use will change based off where you are at, visibility, and bottom composition.
