Angry supporters of the Iraqi cleric stormed a government palace on Monday as tensions soared amid a nearly year-long political stalemate.
Since legislative elections in October last year, the political deadlock has left the country without a new government, prime minister or president, due to a disagreement between factions over forming a coalition.
Shortly after he made his surprise declaration, Sadr followers "entered the Republican Palace", a government building inside of Baghdad's fortified Green Zone that also houses diplomatic missions.
