So you've heard it's good
So you've heard it's good money and you want to work on the rigs. But what's it like? On a drilling rig, the entry-level positions is Leasehand. The Leasehand's main responsibility is keeping the rig clean and tidy. Like any rig crew member, the Leasehand must be a hard worker, focused on safety, and physically capable to work a long shift and do some heavy lifting. With time and experience, the Leasehand will transition into a Floorhand position and from there progress to become a Motorhand, then a Derrickhand, then a Driller.
This video follows Garrett Zuchkan, Leasehand on Savanna rig 651, as he performs his daily tasks of scrubbing the rig, carrying chemical bags, moving and wrapping hose, cleaning up tools, taking out garbage. Garrett briefly describes the other positions on a drilling rig crew and talks about the benefits and challenges of working in the oil field.
