Tara National Park is situated in the western part of Serbia. It is a part of the Dinaric Alps and spans 183 square kilometres. The park is 50 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide, with an average elevation of 1200 meters above sea level. The largest population of brown bears in Serbia inhabits this area. Due to its climate and isolation, Tara has preserved ancient species of trees such as the pancic spruce and other almost fossil-like plants. The highest point in the park is Kozji Rid, which stands at 1591 meters, while the lowest point is at Lake Perućac, which is 291 meters above sea level. Vrelo River, the most substantial fountain in the national park, runs into the Drina River, 365 meters long.
Tara is a picturesque forest area that boasts diverse forest ecosystems, making it one of Europe's most valuable and affluent forests. The forest is predominantly covered with mixed European Spruce, Silver Fir, and European Beech forests, which account for over 85% of the forest area. What sets Tara apart from other mountains on the Balkan Peninsula is many relict and endemic forest species and plant communities. The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika), an endemic and relict species that inhabits canyons and ravines of the middle course of the Drina River, is of exceptional value and importance as it managed to survive the last ice age. Tara is home to 53 species of mammals, with bears (Ursus arctos) and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) being the most interesting, living even at an elevation of 291m. There are also 135 species of birds, with endangered species such as the golden eagle (Aquila chryssetos) and peregrine falcon being the most interesting. Tara is home to more than 251 species of mushrooms, but three of them are poisonous, with Amanita phalloides being the most dangerous mushroom in Europe. Numerous archaeological sites and monuments are throughout the park, dating from the Neolithic period to modern times. The Račа Monastery is one of the most important centres of Serbian medieval literacy, and the cemetery with tombstones in Rastiste and Perucac is nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
